“Traces of Empire” exhibition to bring community stories of shared history to Coatbridge
North Lanarkshire Muslim Women & Family Alliance, in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council and Historic Environment Scotland, invites all communities to a free exhibition exploring the legacy of the British Empire.

COATBRIDGE, Scotland — North Lanarkshire Muslim Women & Family Alliance (NLMWFA) will host Traces of Empire: Voices, Memories & Our Shared History, a free community exhibition exploring the personal and collective stories of communities shaped by the British Empire.
The exhibition opens on Sunday 4 October 2026 for three weeks at Summerlee Museum, Coatbridge, ML5 1QD. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
Co-created with community groups across North Lanarkshire, the exhibition draws on oral histories, workshops and storytelling sessions to bring these experiences vividly to life. Through real accounts of migration, resilience and belonging, Traces of Empire invites visitors to reflect on the past, recognise its resonance in the present and take part in building a more inclusive future together.

An invitation to every community
The event welcomes voluntary and community organisations, faith and cultural groups, youth groups, seniors, families, local councillors, partners and friends. Visitors are invited to come, learn, listen, share and connect.
Traces of Empire is organised by North Lanarkshire Muslim Women & Family Alliance in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council and Historic Environment Scotland (Àrainneachd Eachdraidheil Alba). It is proudly presented as a community event led by women, for everyone — honouring shared histories, valuing every voice and celebrating a shared future.
